Our now annual village rogation walk saw the Methodist church once again host the start point of the event. Over 200 walkers set off around the parishes after enjoying tea, coffee and toast. Many thanks to all the servers and setting up to make such a lovely start. Once again our annual fish and chip supper quiz turned out to be a success. Vince our quizmaster supremo did a "tremendous" job of keeping the quiz teams in check. His "horrendous" questions kept all the contestants working hard and even the "hazardous" waste from the fish and chips was swiftly dealt with making the whole evening a "stupendous" success.
We even had to deal with a question like "which are the only four commonly used words which end in DOUS?" Can you guess the answers yet? Many thanks to all who helped set up, wash up and keep the punters happy with particular thanks to Vince our quizmaster. The winning team "Aint got a clue" clearly did; with a winning score of 48. However the other teams mostly kept them very honest. The Mensa rejects, Dream team, The cottagers, Pennys gang, The odd bods, Been here before and the 5% club all enjoyed themselves immensely. Keith has now taken up residence in our business facilities and has taken the time to introduce himself. Some of you may have seen me around already and wondered what on earth all the comings and goings were. Well, I can assure you that the lead on the church roof is still intact and it’s just me settling in to my new home ( or office at least ). I’m Keith Brown and run a tiny video production company called Red Button Editing Ltd that supplies editing services to an array of broadcasters such as BBC, Channel 5 and Channel 4, producing a number of programmes you may have seen and probably quite a few you haven’t!
I’d been unhappy with my old office provider for some time ( I never liked working from home or living at work as I prefer to call it ) so when I saw an advert in the Coleshill Post offering an office space, everything fell into place, especially as I live in Water Orton and the commute is only about 10 minutes. I spent most of my formative years in Coleshill, before being lured away by the bright lights of Birmingham for work but returned to this part of Warwickshire 20 years ago, so I know the area well and feel as if I’ve tapped into the community again. I’d like to thank Nick for dealing with the church hierarchy and Jane and Jill for making me feel welcome and making the transition so painless. I’ve also met some of the other church members whilst moving in and they too have been very friendly and welcoming – it seems like the Methodist way. Finally, I’ve had high speed full fibre broadband installed as it’s an essential element of my operation. I have to connect to various production facilities around the country and stream the high definition rushes to be then edited and streamed back. The good news is that the broadband is lightning fast and as there is such a good connection and is more than ample for my needs, it only seems fair to share it with any tech-savvy church members and the WiFi details are available in the kitchen – feel free to log on. Please also feel free to pop in and introduce yourselves as I’m always looking for an excuse to put the kettle on and avoid doing any work. Should you need to get in touch please email: [email protected] Over 60 people joined us at the church this afternoon for tea and cake. Choir led the singalong and everyone joined in old folk songs. It was all good fun but if you did not get your Coronation coins, you must contact the parish clerk or speak to Jill. Thanks to all who made cakes, washed up or put up decorations for this special event. A lovely afternoon, with delicious sandwiches, scones, strawberries and cakes. Pots of tea, excellently served by two young waiters Xavier and Frank.
A good introduction to the afternoon with nine people from all over the parish, chapel members and attendees from St Giles and Shustoke all gathered to try out the crafts and have a chat of course.
The church was packed with many from the local community, who came shopping for festive products ranging from reindeer food to cakes. Tea and coffee was being served and many festive hats were to be seen.
Lynda Gascoigne won the hamper. Jill Howell guessed the number of beads in the jar(188) Chris Mansel won the cherry cake which contained 29 cherries Colin Bowerman correctly named the bears, Harry and Haimish. Over £700 was raised on the day, towards our Chapel maintenance fund. Many thanks to all our helpers for such a fantastic result. The final count up of cash and cheques donated for Christian Aid 2021 from the villages realised the fantastic total of £743.16. Additional Gift Aid contributions will have added approximately £100 more onto this total. Bearing in mind that there could be no house to house collections this year and that donations all had to be ‘dropped off’ this was a superb result. Many thanks to all those who contributed so generously to Christian Aid this year and to Station Stores and the local pubs who helped us with the ‘drop off’ locations.
We gathered to sing some socially distanced carols on the grass in front of the church, beside the nativity scene. Two different groups of singers were distanced from each other for this and the singing was accompanied by Jill, our choir conductor. Quite a number of different people came to join in with the choir from the pavement. £47 was raised for Alzheimer’s society; mental health being at the forefront of people’s minds this year. |
