Harvest Supper

30/9/2013

A lovely evening when a lot of people gathered from all over the village and a little further afield. Rev Derek Shaw started proceedings with a prayer of thanksgiving for the food and much hilarity and good conversation ensued. With Mavis Coggins recovering at home the kitchen team, ended up being not one but two down as Mrs Wagg had to go to hospital earlier in the afternoon as well. However despite these set backs the service was just as smooth as usual, many thanks. The post supper lunch quiz bought new winners and was a closely fought event but in the end was a runaway win. Second prize was more closely fought and the third prize play off question was to guess how many miles Coleshill was from John O'Groats. (567 miles in case your interested)

Harvest Festival

29/9/2013

A lovely Sunday with two well attended services. A nice load of food has been given which will be sent to the food bank in Tamworth. All the food was requested to be none perishable and this was reflected by the lack of usual country based free produce. However a few marrows and apples still managed to sneak onto the entrance table along with the traditional display on the altar which contains the lump of coal, loaf of bread and glass of water.

Many thanks to all those who have given their time and talents to make our chapel look so beautiful and to provide us with refreshments.

Advent
ADVENT
Advent is the new year of the Christian Church and the season that leads to Christmas Day. Advent is the time when Christians around the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the Lord into the world through the birth of His Son Jesus Christ. Advent is a time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness.

CHRISTMAS     25th Dec
Christmas (or Christ’s Mass) is the time when Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. A truly magical season bringing families and friends together to share the much loved traditions and customs which have been with us for centuries.

Epiphany
EPIPHANY       6th Jan
The feast of Epiphany remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by doing so reveal Jesus to the world as Lord and King. For many Christian church traditions, the season of Epiphany extends from January 6th until Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Lent
LENT        5th March 2014
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and lasts for six and a half weeks, finishing at Easter. Lent is when Christians remember the forty days and nights Jesus spent alone in the desert without food being tempted by the Devil. Jesus used this time to prepare for His work by fasting and praying. Lent is a time for Christians to give up luxuries and to practise self-discipline.

Good Friday
GOOD FRIDAY      18th April 2014
On Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday, Christians remember the day when Jesus was arrested and tried and finally crucified on the cross.

Easter
EASTER       20th April 2014
Easter is the oldest and most important Christian Festival, the celebration of the coming to life again of Jesus Christ. This message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.

ASCENSION       29th May 2014
Forty days after His resurrection, the Bible records Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. Ascension Day marks the last time Jesus appeared to His disciples, telling them that He would always be with them and promising them the gift of the Holy Spirit.

PENTECOST       8th June 2014
Pentecost (Whitsunday) is a major festival in the church year and is recognised as the birth of the Christian Church. Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus, in the form of flames, ten days after the ascension and fifty days after the resurrection.

TRINITY        15th June 2014
Trinity Sunday commemorates a doctrine rather than an event or person – on Trinity Sunday, the Sunday following Pentecost, Christians remember and honour the eternal God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the fascinating mystery of three in one.

HARVEST
Harvest festival is a celebration and thanksgiving of all the crops and fruits of the land. This festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them. The tradition of celebrating Harvest Festival in churches as we know it today began in Victorian times and many of our popular harvest hymns date back to this time. Decorating churches with produce has become an annual custom and this produce is often shared with those in need.

ALL SAINTS’ DAY     1st November 2014
All Saints’ Day is a time for Christians to remember all those saints and martyrs who dedicated or sacrificed their lives to Christianity, particularly those who do not have their own special feast day.

September Coffee Morning

5/9/2013

A lovely day once again to meet raising £98 this month for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. A surprise visit by the local constabulary livened up the proceedings even if the visit was so brief some people missed them. Jack entertained us with his regular joke slot and many discussed the holidays and bemoaned the return to work for some.

Whitacre Congregation is a vibrant mix of young and old who enjoy meeting for Sunday worship. Do come and join us.
