This year the theme of the service is based on Ephesians 1:15-19. The choir led the singing. Within the service with a number of ladies took turns to read from the written elements by the Taiwanese women. Fiona made a melt in the mouth pineapple cake of Taiwanese origin recipe. The choir sang and prayers were said and £104.50 raised for WDP.
A well attended service with the service sheet prepared by the women of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. "I know the plans I have for you" was led by Fiona Bennet as the main speaker supported by a number of other women readers who lit seven candles during the service. The choir also led the singing with a lovely descant in the last hymn "The day thou gavest, Lord, has ended" After the service tea and cake with sausage rolls and biscuits were enjoyed. A successful return of our traditional candlelit carol service was superbly lead by Fiona. She steered us through the lessons all read by sons and daughters of church members. The choir performed some individual carols as well as leading the congregation as well as contributing some descant verses. The last treat you might have been lucky to see was a nativity play before all retired for mince pies and tea in the school room. Look out for the premiere of the nativity play film...
We gathered to sing some socially distanced carols on the grass in front of the church, beside the nativity scene. Two different groups of singers were distanced from each other for this and the singing was accompanied by Jill, our choir conductor. Quite a number of different people came to join in with the choir from the pavement. £47 was raised for Alzheimer’s society; mental health being at the forefront of people’s minds this year. The choir entertained over sixty people for an enjoyable afternoon. The ladies of the choir looked very good in their black and white with red scarves, and the gentlemen very smart in red bow ties. They started off the first section with "Love is all around" followed by more love songs including "Love me tender” by Michael 'Elvis' Pointer, which was the first of 3 solo performances. Our two youngest members, Gary and Emily, were the other two soloists singing "Edelweiss" and "Where is love" from Oliver respectively. The love songs were followed by songs from the shows including The Sound of Music, all conducted very expertly by Jill, and accompanied on the piano by David. The final song was "This Little Light of Mine" which everyone joined in with, not being allowed to leave till Jill thought it sounded good enough! After the concert everyone moved outside taking a chair with them, and sat in the glorious sunshine. It was nice to see Derek, a previous Minister who shared a table with us. In all a very enjoyable afternoon. Delicious cakes and plain, fruit and cherry scones, with tea or coffee were served in the schoolroom by Ann Pointer and her team of helpers from the choir. The total raised from this event was £490. Thank you to all who came and all who helped make the afternoon a success. The Whitacre Choir performed a musical evening to a packed audience in the Chapel. The audience was treated to a variety of songs ranging from the more familiar - the theme tune from the Vicar of Dibley, love songs from Elvis, Andy Williams and Tony Christie - to the challenging harmonies of British contemporary composer, John Rutter. Soloist Michael Pointer gave us an excellent rendition of "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" whilst Hilary Oakley gave the choir a chance to draw breath with her narration of a witty Joyce Grenfell poem. Gospel songs (with some enthusiastic audience participation) were on the agenda in the second half of the concert. Gifts of thanks were presented to pianist David Gumbley for all his help with the concert practices and of course to choir leader Jill Howell for all her hard work and patience! The concert has raised over £500 for the Chapel but was also held as a tribute to much loved choir member Bill Burnett who passed away very recently and whose presence and commitment to the Whitacre choir will be sorely missed.       Over eighty people attended the choir concert where there was a varied programme of sacred and secular music, which everyone seemed to enjoy. A total of £635 was raised for the Methodist church. Thanks are due to the choir for their hard work and to Mr. David Gumley who accompanied the choir.
Once again we have had a feast of services to celebrate the harvest festival. We had both a morning service and an evening traditional sing with the choir were well attended. The festivites has raised £179 and the food which we have collected is going to be delivered to Chapter 1 in Atherstone, which together with NWBC run "2nd chance furniture" and distribute food to those who are referred to them. Flowers have also been distributed locally to those who are not very well. The packed and fully sold out Harvest Supper the following evening was concluded with its now familiar but never the same Vince Coggins Quiz which eventually saw a new table of winners. Thanks go to Chris and Sue for all their hard work preparing the meal and looking after us all. Do you know who ran the first foreign excursion in 1855? How many lines are there in a sonnet? What is Sherlocks Holmes actually address? (is it a trick question?) The prize for the best answer to "where did Captain Cook first land in Australia?" has to be the memorable, even if technically non scoring "on the beach" which our quizmaster would not allow!
